For years the two of us have been harboring a dream, to take a year off to travel together with our son, Brook. We're delighted to now be fulfilling that dream. In July 2011 we began the trip of a lifetime, traveling around the world. We are learning from and adventuring amidst other cultures, schooling Brook along the way, and creating fantastic family memories. Please share your comments and questions! - John and Eydie

Spanish and a Siesta

This week Spanish class is in the afternoon instead of first thing in the morning.  Our new routine has us doing homework by the pool after breakfast, taking a swim, and eating lunch before going to class.  The days are getting hotter.  After class, it’s siesta time, time to retreat to our room for a snooze, to kick back, to blog, or to do whatever it takes to keep cool. Eventually we ride our bikes into town or to the beach for dinner.  The people in Tulum are friendly and very patient with our Spanish. Generally, we end up having a nice interaction with the folks at the restaurant.  It’s a pretty nice routine.

Spanish is moving at a faster pace this week especially for John and Brook.  I’m starting to relearn some of the irregular verbs that I have forgotten.  Instead of going over things that I remember from 7th grade we are starting to learn some of the things that I know that I’ve forgotten.

This morning we were trying to do our homework, which was to write about a funny or humorous experience, una chistosa.  We couldn’t come up with any funny stories. After all of our travels, we are amazed that we couldn’t think of anything funny.  All of the things that we have laughed about don’t seem that funny now.  Many seem mean or sick when put into writing.
